Durante la primera fase de la cuarentena, como muchos de nosotras buscaba actividades y pasatiempos para ocupar mi nueva eternidad de tiempo libre. Los videojuegos de los 90 se convirtió en una nueva área de interés; culpo a la serie de Netflix High Score (2020) como responsable. Uno de los episodios explicó la importancia y la historia de, lo adivinaste, Mortal Kombat. Como la mayoría, reconocía el nombre pero no sabía mucho más allá de palabras claves como violencia gráfica de los 90. Recomendaría la serie de Netflix a cualquiera, de verdad. Sin embargo, esta nueva entrada a la franquicia Mortal Kombat no es tan fácil de recomendar.

Yo diría que la película es divertida.

Los personajes son buenos; algunos actores hacen un mejor trabajo que otros. Personalmente, no disfruté de la actuación del actor principal. Entiendo que esto es un blockbuster. Sin embargo, a veces parecía que el protagonista Cole Young interpretado por Lewis Tan habría sido más adecuado para un papel en las entradas anteriores de la franquicia.

Matilda Kiber interpreta a la hija de Cole, Emily. Pensé que su actuación fue buena y su personaje tuvo algunos buenos momentos. Laura Brent interpreta a Allison, su esposa. Probablemente tuvo tres frases sassy. Aún así, aparte de eso, pensé que su personaje era bastante insulso.

El otro actor que pensé que también se adapta más a las películas de los 90 fue la protagonista femenina Sonya Blade. Aunque los obstáculos que ella superó para convertirse en una «guerrera» de la Tierra como un gran arco de personaje.Su mejor amigo / compañero oficial convertido en salvadores de la Tierra Jax es interpretado por Mehcad Brooks. Hay una farsa temprana sobre el destino de su personaje, que me alivió no fuese cierto. Cerca del final de la película, hay una situación similar que estaba igualmente emocionada de que tampoco se cumpliera.

Josh Lawson, quien interpreta a Kano, fue lo más destacado de la película para mí. Algunas de sus reapariciones me hicieron reír. Me gustó cómo no hicieron que el villano pícaro y encantador se remitiera a sí mismo. Por momentos parecía que los cineastas querían que Sonya y Kano tuvieran una especie de dinámica de Kylo Ren y Rey. Digamos que el final de esta relación fue muy satisfactorio.

La película comienza con su secuencia más fuerte, en mi opinión. Empieza en el año 1617 en Japón donde conocemos a Escorpio, que en este punto se llama Hanso Hisashi. Y spoiler, su esposa e hijo son rápidamente congelados para el desarrollo de su personaje. El culpable es Bi-Han, que se convertirá en Sub-Zero, un hombre de muy pocas palabras. Hiroyuki Sanada (Escorpio) y Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero) se comprometen plenamente con sus roles. Su enemistad es fundamental para la trama de la película y la impulsa hacia adelante. Esta introducción fue, por mucho, la sección más visualmente impactante de la película. Aunque vemos muy poco de Yukiko Shinohara, quien interpreta a la esposa de Escorpio, ella me dejó una impresión.

Me pareció un poco extraño cómo su hija pequeña sobrevivió al ataque de Sub-Zero, ya que su madre la escondió de una manera de «niña elegida». Después del derramamiento de sangre de la pelea, Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), el defensor inconsistente de la Tierra, se la lleva. Sus ojos extrañamente azules me recordaron esos horribles lentes de contacto que le pusieron a Jessica Alba y Jennifer Garner en Fantastic 4 y Daredevil, respectivamente. Bueno, él baja, toma a la niña que asumí era «la elegida», la niña que vivió (¿me entiendes?) Y la lleva de regreso a un reino mágico. Hagrid, ¿eres tú? Sin embargo, nunca volvemos a saber de ella. En cambio, nos llevan al día de hoy y conocemos a Cole.

No estoy diciendo que el protagonista de la película necesitará ser una mujer, PERO me parece extraño como no hicieron nada con su personaje. Ni la menciona en el resto de la película. 

¿Es relevante esto para la película? No.

¿Estaría mintiendo si dijera que esto no es lo que estaba pensando durante la mayor parte de la película? Sí.

Continuamos siguiendo a Cole cuando es reclutado por Jax y Sonya, ya que también lleva la marca del dragón. Los malos vienen a la Tierra para matar a los guerreros de la Tierra, y pensé que nuestros héroes se lo tomaron demasiado bien. La acción se sintió un poco apresurada. Los personajes aceptaron fácilmente esta trama de videojuego noventero. Nota para mí misma, si me llego a encontrar en un evento sobrenatural apocalíptico, espero adaptarme tan rápido y bien como esta gente.

Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) y Kung Lao (Max Huang) son los otros dos guerreros elegidos de la Tierra. Aunque sus personajes no tuvieron tanto desarrollo como los otros tres protagonistas, sus escenas de lucha estaban entre las mejores.

Hay un incidente particularmente sangriento con el sombrero de Kung Lao. Cerca del final, Sub Zero congela / *fridged a la esposa y la hija de Cole haciendo eco con la escena de apertura. Sin embargo, él y Escorpio eventualmente las descongelaron. Me sentí aliviado de que no más mujeres sufrieran daños (permanentes) en la realización del desarrollo de otro personaje masculino.

Honestamente, las escenas de lucha fueron, por mucho, de lo mejor que la película tenía para ofrecer. Aunque algunos de los personajes eran buenos y tenían grandes momentos, me encontré pensando demasiado en el destino del bebé de Escorpio y esperando la próxima pelea sangrienta.

Claramente tienen varias secuelas planeadas y también la introducción de otro personaje crítico. Pero yo probablemente no las veré. Al fin del día estas películas no son para mí, son para los fanáticos de Mortal Kombat, y creo que disfrutarán esto y las muchas secuelas que Warner Brothers está planeando. No hay mucho que no me guste de la película, las peleas son geniales y esta película sabe lo que es, un divertido blockbuster basado en un juego de los 90. Supongo que me preguntaré qué pasó con la heroína que podría haber sido y espero que ella salga en una de las múltiples secuelas.

During quarantine 1.0, I looked for activities and hobbies to occupy my new eternity of time like many of us. One recent area of interest became arcade video games; I blame Netflix’s High Score (2020) for being the catalyst. One of the episodes explained the importance and history of, you guessed it, Mortal Kombat. Like most, I recognized the IP but didn’t know much beyond violent, 90s, teens, and arcades. I would recommend the Netflix series to anyone, really. However, this new entry into the MK franchise is not as easy to recommend. 

I would say the film is not not enjoyable. 

The characters are good; some actors do a better job than others. I personally did not particularly enjoy the lead actor’s performance. I understand this is a fun blockbuster film. However, at times it felt like protagonist Cole Young played by Lewis Tan, would have been better suited for a role in the franchise’s earlier entries.

Matilda Kiber plays Cole’s young daughter Emily. I thought her performance was good, and they did give her character some interesting moments. Laura Brent plays Allison, his wife. She had probably had three quippy one-liners. Still, other than that, I thought her character was quite bland. 

The other actor I thought also edged on suiting the 90s films more was the female lead Sonya Blade. Though I find the obstacles, she overcame to become a «warrior» for Earth as a great character arch. Her bestie/fellow officer turned saviors of Earth Jax is played by Mehcad Brooks. There’s an early fakeout about his character’s fate, which I was relieved didn’t stick. Near the end of the film, there’s a similar fakeout which I was equally thrilled also didn’t stick.  

Josh Lawson, who plays Kano, was a highlight of the movie for me. A few of his comebacks did make me laugh. I liked how they did not have the roguishly charming villain redeem himself. At moments it looked like the filmmakers were going for Sonya and Kano to have a sort of Kylo Ren and Rey dynamic. Let’s just say the end of this relationship was very satisfying. 

The film starts out with its strongest sequence, in my opinion. The backdrop is 1617 Japan, and we are introduced to Scorpio, who at this point goes by Hanso Hisashi. And spoiler, his wife and son are quickly fridged/frozen for character development. The culprit being Bi-Han, who will become Sub-Zero, a man of very few words. Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpio) and Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero) fully commit to their roles. Their feud is central to the plot and drives it forward. This introduction was by far the most visually striking section of the film. Though we see very little from Yukiko Shinohara, who plays Scorpio’s wife, she left an impression on me. 

I found it somewhat odd how their baby daughter survived Sub-Zero’s attack since her mother hid her away in a «chosen child» sort of way. After the bloodshed of the fight, she is spirited away by Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Earth’s inconsistent defender. His oddly blue eyes reminded me of those awful eye contacts they put on Jessica Alba and Jennifer Garner in Fantastic 4 and DareDevil, respectively. Well, he comes down, gets the I assumed chosen child, the girl who lived ( you catch my drift?) and takes her back to a magical realm. Hagrid, is that you? However, we never hear from her again. Instead, we are taken to the present day and meet Cole.

I’m not saying the film’s protagonist needed to buy a woman, BUT it does seem to be like an odd loose end. She isn’t mentioned throughout the rest of the film. 

Is this relevant to the film? No. 

Would I be lying if I said this isn’t what I was thinking throughout most of the film? Yes. 

We continue to follow Cole as he is recruited by Jax and Sonya since he also bears the dragon’s mark. The bad guys come to Earth to kill off Earth’s warriors, and I thought our heroes took it all a tad too well. The action felt a bit rushed. The character readily accepted this 90s arcade plot. Note to self if ever in a near-apocalyptic supernatural event, I hope to adapt nearly as fast and well as these folks. 

Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Kung Lao (Max Huang) are Earth’s other two chosen warriors. Though they didn’t have as much character development as the other three leads, their fighting scenes were among the best.

There’s one particularly bloody incident with Kung Lao’s hat. Near the end, Sub Zero freezes/*fridges Cole’s wife and daughter echoing the opening scene. However, he and Scorpio eventually thaw them out. I was relieved no more women weren’t harmed in the making of another male character’s development. 

Honestly, the fighting scenes were by far the best the film had to offer. Though some of the characters were good and had great moments, I found myself overthinking Scorpio’s baby’s fate and looking forward to the next bloody fight. 

They clearly set up a sequel and the introduction of another critical character. I probably won’t watch it. But these movies aren’t for me, they are for Mortal Kombat fans, and I do believe they will enjoy this and the many sequels Warner Brothers is planning. There isn’t much not to like, the fights are great, and this film knows what it is, a fun blockbuster based on an 90s arcade game. I guess I’ll just wonder what happened to the hero that could have been and hope she shows in one of the multiple sequels.
